APPETITES THAT ROB

Genesis 3:6 She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. NLT

Adam and Eve literally ate themselves out of their beautiful garden home! Their stomachs cut them off from God’s presence, blessing, and purpose. Their hunger was temporarily satisfied, but now we all suffer from the consequences of the appetite that ruled them.

How many times in your life, have you found that an appetite robbed you of receiving God’s blessing? I’m sure you, like me, can think of many situations when a fleshly craving robbed you of that which would have been more satisfying in the long run.

God offers us a choice: We can bite into the fruit of obedience and surrender to His will and way, or we can bite the apple of our appetites instead. One brings blessing and abundant life. One brings limitation and death.

John 10:10 The thief comes to rob, kill and destroy; but I have come that you may have life to the full.

Eve and Adam were deceived in thinking that satisfying their immediate craving would lead to anything more than a temporary cessation of hunger, because within hours, they’re stomachs began to grumble for another “apple”. But this time, they’d lost the true food of God’s presence and purpose in their lives. That is the food that satisfies eternally.

Psalm 42:1-2a As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God… NIV
